The embroidery tradition of Fez, locally known as terz d-el-ghorza, sprang into existence in 18th-century Morocco and ultimately became the preponderant form of embroidery in that country. Although invariably monochromatic, Fez embroideries appear in various colors, with geometric designs being strongly favored (Stone 1985: 28–9). This fine example has been professionally mounted on a stretcher frame and may be hung four different ways, depending on one’s fancy.
